Patient Preparations

Preparation For Your Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy Or Upper Endoscopy.
These instructions apply to all colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy or upper endoscopy procedures.

One week prior to the procedure:
Avoid aspirin and aspirin products such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, Ecotrin, Vioxx, Celebrex and blood thinning medications such as Coumadin, Plavix, multivitamin and Vitamin E for one week prior to the procedure. Only tylenol is allowed.

You must have a pregnancy test 7 days prior to your procedure date at your participating lab, or at our office the morning of the proceedure for a $15.00 fee.

Confirm Your Procedure:
Please call to confirm the time you are to arrive. If you are scheduled on a Monday, call on the Friday before. If your procedure is in our office, call 631-331-7200 three days before the procedure after 3:00 p.m. If your procedure is at the hospital call the day before. Call Mather at 631-476-2727 between 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Call St. Catherine at 631-862-3636 after 4:00 p.m. Call St. Charles at 631-474-6285 after 4:00 p.m.

Day of Procedure:
If you take heart or blood pressure medications in the morning, you may take them as usual. Hold other medications until after your procedure, unless otherwise directed by your physician.

Do not have ANYTHING in the morning including water and chewing gum.

You must be driven home after the procedure. You will not be allowed to drive or work until the following day.

 

Day Before the Procedure:
Drink lots of fluids throughout the day until midnight.

Colonoscopy with NuLYTELY, GoLYTELY or Colyte:

  1. In the morning prepare the solution according to the instructions on the package and refrigerate.
  2. Have a light breakfast.
  3. At 12:00 noon, start a clear liquid diet. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  4. At 4:00 p.m. begin drinking the solution, one glass every 10 to 15 minutes until the container is empty. You will need 3 to 4 hours to finish the container.
  5. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with Miralax:

  1. Purchase 64oz. Gatorade (not red, blue or purple) and 4 Dulcolax tablets. Fill prescription for Miralax (255g).
  2. Stay on a liquid diet the entire day. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  3. At 5:00 p.m. mix the entire bottle of Miralax into the bottle of Gatorade. Make sure it is well desolved.
  4. Begin drinking the solution, one glass every 10 to 15 minutes until the container is empty.
  5. At 9:00 p.m. take all four Dulcolax pills at once with water. Continue to drink as much water as possible until bedtime.
  6. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with MoviPrep:

  1. In the morning prepare the MoviPrep by combining one Pouch A and one Pouch B into the disposable container. Add lukewarm water, shake well to dissolve and refrigerate.
  2. Stay on a liquid diet the entire day. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  3. At 5:30 p.m. begin drinking the solution. Have 1 glass every 15 minutes until the liter is empty. Follow with 16 oz. clear liquid of your choice.

Colonoscopy with HalfLytely:

  1. Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  2. At 5 pm take all four Bisacodyl tablets with water, do not crush or chew. Mix solution and refrigerate. No antacids should be taken within 1 hour of taking Bisacodyl tablets.
  3. Three hours later begin drinking solution - 1 glass every 10 to 15 minutes until container is empty.
  4. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with Split Movi:

  1. In the morning prepare the MoviPrep by combining one Pouch A and one Pouch B into the disposable container. Add lukewarm water, shake well to dissolve and refrigerate.
  2. Stay on a liquid diet the entire day. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  3. At 5:30 p.m. begin drinking the solution. Have 1 glass every 15 minutes until the liter is empty. Follow with 16 oz. clear liquid of your choice.
  4. Three hours before you leave for your procedure take your second dose. Combine pouch A and B with water to top line. Shake well to dissolve. Drink a full glass every fifteen minutes until container is empty. Follow with 16oz. clear liquid.
  5. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with HalfLytely:

  1. Stay on a liquid diet the entire day. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  2. At 12 noon take all four Bisacodyl tablets with water, do not crush or chew. Wait for bowel movement - usually 1 - 6 hours. Mix solution and refrigerate. No antacids should be taken within 1 hour of taking Bisacodyl tablets.
  3. At first bowel movement or 6 hours later (whichever comes first), begin drinking solution - 1 glass every 10 to 15 minutes until container is empty.
  4. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with OSMO Tablets:

  1. Stay on a liquid diet the entire day. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  2. Early evening take 4 OSMO tablets with at least 8 oz. of clear liquid every 15 minutes for a total of 20 tablets.
  3. On the day of procedure, three-five hours before leaving for your appointment, take four pills every 15 minutes for a total of twelve tablets. Take with clear liquid.
  4. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT - INCLUDING WATER AND CHEWING GUM.

Colonoscopy with Fleet Phospho-Soda:

  1. By two one and one-half oz. bottles of Fleet Phospho-Soda which is sold over the counter at your pharmacy.
  2. Have a light breakfast. At noon start a clear liquid diet. Solid foods, milk or milk products are not allowed. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, clear fruit juices without pulp such as apple or white grape, beef or chicken broth or bouillon, carbonated beverages, lemonade, Gatorade, lemon-lime or orange Jello, ice popsicles and hard candy. Nothing blue, red or purple.
  3. At 7:00 p.m. add first bottle 1 ½ oz. to 4 oz. clear Gatorade, ginger ale or apple juice and drink. Follow with one 8 oz. glass of approved clear liquid. Remain close to toilet.
  4. Drink at least 3 more 8 oz. glasses of clear liquid before retiring.
  5. Three hours before you leave for the procedure add second bottle 1 ½ oz. to 4 oz. of clear Gatorade, ginger ale or apple juice and drink. Follow with one full glass of approved clear liquid. Nothing after this until your procedure.

Sigmoidoscopy:

  1. Purchase two fleet enemas (green and white box, water enema) at your local pharmacy.
  2. Do not eat or drink anything two hour prior to your procedure.
  3. Use the first enema 2 hours prior to procedure time.
  4. Use second enema 1 hour prior to procedure time.

Upper Endoscopy:

  1. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to your procedure.
  2. Do not have ANYTHING in the morning of procedure including water and chewing gum.
